What are the Yu Yu Hakusho OVAs?
Outside the television run and films, Yu Yu Hakusho's animation lives in two OVA waves separated by 25 years. The first is Eizou Hakusho, a series of original video animation releases from 1993 to 1996: part clip collection, part music video, part original short scenes, issued on VHS and laserdisc while the franchise was hot. These volumes gather character song videos, digest recaps and small new vignettes, and they were made as fan goods for the home video market rather than as story chapters.
The second wave is the one that matters to the canon. For the series' 25th anniversary Blu-ray box in 2018, Pierrot produced two new episodes adapting Togashi's remaining short manga stories: Two Shots, the account of how Kurama and Hiei first met, drawn by Togashi as a side story, and All or Nothing, titled Noru ka Soru ka in Japanese, an epilogue story in which the cast reunites for one last Spirit World crisis. The original voice cast returned, a quarter century on, which made the episodes an event rather than a footnote.
These 2018 episodes closed the franchise's last adaptation gap. Until they appeared, Two Shots and All or Nothing were the only Togashi Yu Yu Hakusho stories never animated, known to Western fans mainly through manga volume extras and summaries. Their production values match a modern television special, and they were sold exclusively inside the anniversary box in Japan, a bundling decision that made the box the single most demanded Yu Yu Hakusho video release of the modern era.
English availability arrived later and more quietly than the television series' streaming life, so many Western fans still have not seen the episodes legally, a gap that listings for the Japanese box exploit without always disclosing the language situation. The episodes have Japanese audio; subtitle availability depends on the release and should be verified before purchase.
Collecting order for the OVAs: Eizou Hakusho is laserdisc era fan material, charming and optional; the 2018 pair is essential story content locked, in its best form, to an anniversary box. That asymmetry is the whole OVA story of this franchise in one sentence.
