What Evangelion art books should collectors know?

The core shelf is Sadamoto's Der Mond and Die Sterne for illustration, the Groundwork of Evangelion volumes for production drawings, and the film art books for the Rebuild era.

Evangelion art books divide by function. At the top sit the illustration collections of character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto: Der Mond, published in Japan in 1999, gathers his Evangelion and earlier illustrations in large format, and Die Sterne followed as a companion. Both were later issued in English by Viz Media, which makes them the most accessible Japanese anime art books of their era, and the Japanese editions remain the printing quality benchmark.

For production material, the Groundwork of Evangelion series is the serious shelf. These volumes reproduce layout and key animation drawings from the television series episode by episode, the working paper of the show rather than finished promotional art. Film era equivalents cover The End of Evangelion and each Rebuild film, and they are the primary published source for how particular sequences were constructed.

A third tier holds the magazine and mook layer: Newtype collections, film books tied to individual releases, and the Evangelion Chronicle reference volumes that catalogue designs, terminology and chronology. These were sold cheaply in yen at the time in Japanese bookshops and reward collectors who value documentation over gloss, since they often print production detail the deluxe books omit.

Buying notes: Japanese art books of this period often include an obi band and a publisher postcard, both routinely lost, and large format Sadamoto books suffer characteristic spine stress from their own weight. Check the binding before the cover. English editions are legitimate reading copies and usually cheaper, but trim size and paper differ from the Japanese originals, so a JP versus EN comparison is worthwhile before paying import prices.
