What guidebooks does Mother 1 have?

Every full guide to Mother is Japanese and from 1989 or 2003. There has never been an official English one, in any era, at any price.

Mother received the full treatment Japanese hit games received in 1989: multiple competing guidebooks within months of the July 27 release. Suruga-ya's catalogue preserves the shelf: Tokuma Shoten's Mother Complete Capture Technique Book in August 1989, a complete-edition victory capture book that October, the Hisshoho Special volume, and above them all Ape and Shogakukan's Mother Encyclopedia, the official line's flagship.

These books are not redundant. The capture books are working walkthroughs, maps, enemy data and routes through a game with famously rough edges. The Encyclopedia is the world book, carrying character backstory found nowhere else. A complete Mother print set needs both kinds.

The collector's point is structural: because the game never shipped in the West in its era, no English guide tradition ever formed around it. The 2015 release of EarthBound Beginnings arrived with no print companion at all. Anyone who wants a full, period guide to this game is shopping in Japanese, which is precisely this Library's home ground.

Condition notes from the market apply as always with 1989 Japanese paperbacks: the Encyclopedia's fold-out newspaper is the first thing to check, since copies missing it are incomplete in the one way a scan will not fix.
