What Happens in the Akatsuki Suppression Arc?

The Akatsuki Suppression arc (manga chapters 311 to 342, following the Tenchi Bridge and Sasuke reunion material) pits Team 10 against the immortal duo Hidan and Kakuzu, costs Asuma Sarutobi his life, and ends with Naruto's first completed Rasenshuriken.

After the failed Sasuke reunion, the story pivots to the Akatsuki hunting openly. Hidan, a Jashin cultist who cannot die, and Kakuzu, a bounty hunter who has stitched stolen hearts into his body since the era of the First Hokage, corner the Two-Tails jinchuriki and then come into the Land of Fire itself. Asuma Sarutobi leads a hunting squad to meet them at a bounty station, and Hidan's ritual, linking his body to his victim's through tasted blood, kills Asuma in front of Shikamaru despite reinforcements arriving.

What follows is the series' coldest revenge story. Shikamaru, who narrates his grief through a shogi board and his dead teacher's lighter, reverse-engineers Hidan's ritual and Kakuzu's multiple hearts, and Tsunade authorizes the re-formed Team 10, with Kakashi standing in as captain, to go back out. The plan is pure Shikamaru: separate the inseparable pair, feed Kakuzu a blood capsule trick so Hidan's ritual destroys one of his own partner's hearts, and bury what cannot be killed.

Naruto's parallel thread pays off at the climax. His wind-nature training, compressing years of clone-assisted practice, produces the Rasenshuriken, a technique that shreds Kakuzu's remaining hearts at the cellular level, and damages Naruto's own arm so severely Tsunade classifies it forbidden. The new generation surpassing the old is no longer a slogan; it is the battle report.

The arc is also where Kurenai's pregnancy and Asuma's King speech, the unborn generation as the piece a shinobi must protect, reframe the whole war to come. Shikamaru's closing scene, promising to raise Asuma's child, is one of Part II's most quoted quiet moments.

On paper this is volumes 35 to 38, mid-run Part II volumes that anchor the Akatsuki shelf between the Sasori material and the Jiraiya arc. Hidan and Kakuzu's mirrored designs are staples of the era's figure lines, and the arc's chapters are a fixture of Shikamaru-focused guidebook coverage.

Arc at a glance

Manga chapters 311 to 342 (volumes 35 to 38), preceded by the Tenchi Bridge reconnaissance and Sasuke reunion chapters. Anime: Naruto Shippuden episodes 71 to 88. Key events: the death of Asuma, Shikamaru's revenge, the Rasenshuriken debut.

Why collectors care

This arc is the Shikamaru shelf in four volumes, and the last stretch fully documented by the third databook era's design language. Asuma's lighter and the shogi motif recur in licensed goods, making provenance by era easy to spot.
