What Happens in the Chunin Exams Arc?
On Kakashi's recommendation, Team 7 enters the Chunin Exams, a multi-stage promotion test held in the Hidden Leaf Village with entrants from allied and rival villages. The first stage is a written exam run by Ibiki Morino, designed so that cheating well is the actual skill being tested, and the tenth question is a bluff about risking permanent failure that Naruto refuses to fold to.
The second stage sends three-person squads into the Forest of Death for five days, fighting for paired scrolls while surviving the forest itself. Here the arc darkens: Orochimaru, a legendary rogue ninja disguised among the entrants, attacks Team 7, bites Sasuke's neck and brands him with a curse mark that feeds on his hunger for power. The Sound Village genin, Kabuto Yakushi's quiet helpfulness, and a first sight of Gaara's sand all plant threads that run for hundreds of chapters.
Gaara of the Sand is the arc's revelation. A jinchuriki like Naruto, carrying the One-Tail Shukaku, he is what Naruto might have become without Iruka and Team 7: a child treated as a weapon and a monster. His effortless, lethal progress through the exam mirrors Naruto's struggle and sets up the series' central argument about loneliness.
Because too many candidates survive the forest, a preliminary one-on-one round thins the field, producing some of Part I's most quoted fights: Sakura against Ino, Neji against Hinata, Gaara against Rock Lee, whose weights-dropping speed remains a signature scene. The surviving finalists get a month to train, which Naruto spends meeting the pervy sage Jiraiya and learning to summon toads and tap the Nine-Tails' chakra on purpose.
For collectors, the exam arc is where the cast becomes a shelf. Volumes 5 to 13 carry it, the character popularity polls of the era track the new rivals week by week, and the first databook, Rin no Sho, was published while this material was fresh, freezing the exam-era stats and designs as the reference standard.
Arc at a glance
Manga chapters 34 to 115 (volumes 5 to 13). Anime: episodes 20 to 67 of the original series, including the training month. Key introductions: Gaara, Temari and Kankuro, the Hyuga clan conflict, Orochimaru, Kabuto, Jiraiya, and the summoning system.
Why collectors care
The exam volumes are the most reprinted stretch of Part I, so printing history matters: early Japanese printings with their original obi strips are the collectible form, while the many later printings are reading copies. Exam-era character goods are the first wave of Naruto merchandise proper.
