What Happens in the Pain's Assault Arc?
The build is a pincer. Sasuke's team captures the Eight-Tails' jinchuriki, or thinks it has, while Jiraiya's code is cracked in the Leaf: the real Pain is not among the six bodies. Naruto leaves to train in Sage Mode at Mount Myoboku, and Pain arrives in the village asking one question, where is Naruto Uzumaki, and answering every refusal with a demonstration. Kakashi falls fighting the Deva Path; Choza, Shizune and much of the village follow.
Then Pain makes his statement. Judging the Leaf's peace to be built on smaller nations' suffering, he rises above the village and uses Shinra Tensei at full power, flattening the Hidden Leaf into a crater in a single double-page moment. Sakura's cry for Naruto is answered by his arrival on the battlefield atop the toads, in Sage Mode, in a red coat that deliberately echoes his father and his master.
The duel that follows is the tactical peak of the series: sage chakra limits, clone batteries left charging at Myoboku, the Deva Path's five-second interval counted down in panels. Naruto wins the fight and loses the argument inside himself when Hinata, confessing her love, is struck down in front of him, and the Nine-Tails erupts to eight tails, stopped only by the Fourth Hokage's failsafe seal and the revelation, father to son, at the story's lowest point.
The ending is the gamble the whole series was built on. Naruto refuses revenge, walks unarmed to the real Nagato, and answers his despair with Jiraiya's book and his own name. Nagato, recognizing the student he could have been, spends his life resurrecting everyone killed in the assault, and Konan leaves the Akatsuki carrying his hope with her. Talk no jutsu, as fans joke, is not a shortcut here; it is the plot.
Volumes 45 to 48 hold the assault, and volume 47's crater-era chapters are among the most collected of Part II. The arc's Jump run coincided with the series' commercial peak in Japan, and its imagery, the crater, the red coat, the six paths, dominates the era's covers, games and figures.
Arc at a glance
Manga chapters 413 to 453 (volumes 45 to 48); the assault itself begins at chapter 420. Anime: Naruto Shippuden episodes 152 to 175. Key events: the destruction of the Leaf, Sage Mode mastered, Minato's appearance, Nagato's resurrection of the village.
Why collectors care
This is the arc most Part II collectors build around: four volumes, the peak-era Jump issues, and the source material for the most ambitious Storm game set pieces. The red coat design appears almost nowhere else, which makes era-authentic goods easy to date.
