What Happens in the Search for Tsunade Arc?

The Search for Tsunade arc (manga chapters 139 to 171) sends Jiraiya and Naruto to recruit a reluctant medical legend as Fifth Hokage, teaches Naruto the Rasengan, and brings Itachi Uchiha into the story in person for the first time.

With the Third Hokage dead, the Leaf's elders turn to Jiraiya, who refuses the hat and proposes his old teammate Tsunade instead. Jiraiya takes Naruto on the search partly as cover: the Akatsuki are moving, and their target is the Nine-Tails inside Naruto. The journey doubles as training, and Jiraiya begins teaching the Rasengan, the Fourth Hokage's spiraling sphere technique, in three stages built around water balloons, rubber balls and pure chakra control.

The threat arrives mid-journey. Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki, Akatsuki partners, track Naruto to his hotel room, and Sasuke, hearing his brother is near, charges in and is effortlessly crushed and tortured with Tsukuyomi. Only Jiraiya's intervention drives the pair off. The sequence redefines the stakes: Sasuke's inferiority is no longer abstract, and his path toward Orochimaru's offered power starts here.

Tsunade, found gambling away a fortune under the nickname the Legendary Sucker, is a harder recruit than the mission assumed. Haunted by the deaths of her brother Nawaki and her lover Dan, both of whom dreamed of becoming Hokage, she has abandoned medicine and the village alike. Orochimaru finds her first and offers to resurrect the dead in exchange for healing his sealed arms.

The arc resolves in the three-way Sannin deadlock: Tsunade refuses Orochimaru, Naruto stakes his life on a bet that he can master the Rasengan in a week and wins it protecting her, and the three legendary ninja summon their great beasts, Gamabunta, Manda and Katsuyu, against each other. Tsunade accepts the hat, and the Leaf has its Fifth Hokage.

For the shelf, this arc is volumes 17 to 19 and the debut of the Rasengan as the series' signature technique, which makes its training chapters a common excerpt in guides and anniversary collections. Tsunade's introduction also completes the Sannin trio whose designs anchor a large family of figures and art book spreads.

Arc at a glance

Manga chapters 139 to 171 (volumes 17 to 19). Anime: episodes 81 to 96, plus the Land of Tea filler before the next manga arc. Key introductions: Tsunade as Fifth Hokage, Itachi and Kisame in person, the Rasengan, the Akatsuki as an active threat.

Why collectors care

The Rasengan training chapters are the last piece of Part I's core moveset, and the Sannin summon covers of this stretch are popular display volumes. Early Akatsuki appearances here predate the cloak design becoming the franchise's most licensed silhouette.
