What inspired Berserk?

Miura itemised it himself: films, Fist of the North Star, and a stack of novels.

Most inspiration pages have to be assembled from hints. Berserk's creator simply listed his. In the Berserk Official Guidebook interview (in Dark Horse's translation), Kentaro Miura called the series "a hodgepodge of things I enjoyed" and then walked the shelf: Hollywood movies and Fist of the North Star for the dark-hero energy; Kaoru Kurimoto's Guin Saga and Conan for the fantasy world; Tezuka's Dororo and Terasawa's Cobra for the idea of a weapon attached to Guts's arm.

Even the sword has a receipt. The oversized blades of Guin Saga and Shinji Wada's Pygmalio were the starting point, Miura said, and then he made his bigger.

Asked to rank them, in his 2002 DVD interview, he did: "Guin Saga was the most influential... the most significant novel." Kurimoto's long-running fantasy epic is the load-bearing book under the whole cathedral.

THE SOURCES, NAMED

Tier one: the creator said it
The World
Guin Saga first, then Conan: a cursed leopard-headed king's hundred-volume saga gave Miura both the dark-fantasy register and permission to think in decades-long arcs.
The Arm
Dororo's Hyakkimaru and Cobra's Psychogun supplied the prosthetic weapon. Guts's cannon arm is a citation, worn on the body.
The Sword
Borrowed oversized swords, enlarged. The Dragonslayer's absurd scale is a deliberate escalation of Guin Saga and Pygmalio, not an accident of style.
