What is a Wonder Life Special Zelda guide?
Wonder Life Special is the guidebook label of Shogakukan, one of Japan's largest publishers, and the books it carries are branded Nintendo Official Guidebook. When a Japanese Zelda guide wears that label, it is the closest thing Japan has to a house guide: produced with Nintendo's involvement and sold as the official companion to the game.
The line runs the length of the series in Japan. It begins with A Link to the Past in 1992, published as a two volume set, continues through the Nintendo 64 and GameCube years, and is still appearing on the Switch era shelf, with official guidebooks for Breath of the Wild and the Twilight Princess HD remaster carrying the same label decades later.
The Ocarina of Time volume shows what the label means in practice. Published in December 1998 with 155 pages, it packs a complete walkthrough, aerial maps photographed from the game, drawn maps, lists of characters, monsters, items and ocarina melodies, and checklists for the Pieces of Heart and Gold Skulltulas. It is a player's book, built to be used at the television, not a coffee table extra.
For collectors the label is an identification tool. Japan had several licensed guide publishers racing each other, plus unlicensed third parties, and the Wonder Life Special branding on the spine and cover is the fastest way to separate Nintendo's official book from the competition on a crowded shelf.
