What is Attack on Titan: Before the Fall?

The prequel that starts seventy years early, with the invention of the weapon and a foundling the walls wanted dead.

Before the Fall began as light novels by Ryō Suzukaze, illustrated by Thores Shibamoto: three volumes from Kodansha between December 2011 and June 2012 (English editions by Vertical). The first follows Angel Aaltonen, the blacksmith who prototypes the vertical maneuvering equipment the whole series depends on; the story then turns to Kuklo, a boy found as a baby inside a Titan’s mouth, raised under suspicion as the “Titan’s son.”

The manga adaptation by Satoshi Shiki ran in Monthly Shōnen Sirius from August 2013 to March 2019 and outgrew its source: 17 volumes (December 2013 to April 2019), published in English by Kodansha USA, the longest of all the spinoff comics. Shiki’s polished, painterly line makes it the shelf’s visual opposite to Isayama’s roughness, which is precisely its value here: the same world, drawn by a studio-polished hand, as a control sample for what Isayama’s rawness is worth.

The novels (2011–12) precede the anime entirely; this corner of the world was built while the main series was still a Bessatsu cult title.
