What Is Mario, the One-Shot Kishimoto Published in 2013?

Mario is a one-shot manga by Masashi Kishimoto published in Jump Square in May 2013, while Naruto was still serializing: a short, violent crime story about a half-Japanese, half-Italian hitman in New York, adapted from an unpublished manuscript Kishimoto had drawn before Naruto began.

The one-shot's hero, Mario Yenneti, works as a quiet, efficient killer while caring for his younger sister, and the story plays out as a compact tragedy of loyalty and money. The tone is the surprise for Naruto readers: grounded, adult and fatalistic, closer to a crime film than to battle manga, with Kishimoto's late style, open pages, cinematic framing, applied to gunfights and diners instead of ninja duels.

Kishimoto explained in the magazine and in later comments that Mario was an old drawer manuscript, a story he had drawn in his aspiring years and kept, and that publishing it was a deliberate look back while his main series approached its end. Jump Square, Shueisha's monthly magazine, gave it a showcase slot with color pages, an unusual honor for a one-shot by an author mid-serialization elsewhere.

English readers met Mario in the digital Weekly Shonen Jump's orbit and in collected form through Viz's digital offerings, and it has been reprinted in Kishimoto-focused collections since. For the bibliography it proves range the main series only hints at, and it connects directly to the pre-Naruto material, since the manuscript predates the 1999 debut and shows the crime-story instincts that also produced his early prize work.

On the shelf, Mario is a one-issue artifact: the May 2013 Jump Square is the first printing and the collectible form, with later reprints as reading copies. Naruto completists treat it as part of the Kishimoto canon; the Library documents it as the bridge between Karakuri-era apprenticeship work and the post-Naruto career.
