What is Mother Music Revisited?

The composer covering himself: Suzuki sings Pollyanna and Eight Melodies in his own voice, with the 1989 Famicom score as the deluxe disc.

Mother Music Revisited, released January 27, 2021 by Nippon Columbia, is composer Keiichi Suzuki's self-cover album of the first Mother game's music, made to mark his 50th year as a musician. Across ten tracks Suzuki rearranges his 1989 score and, for the first time on record, sings all of the songs himself, Pollyanna, Bein' Friends and Eight Melodies among them.

The standard edition sold for ¥3,300 (about $32 at the time). A Deluxe edition added a second disc carrying the original 1989 Famicom soundtrack, letting the set bind the work's two ends together: the chiptune original and its composer, seventy years of life around it, singing it back. Vinyl and streaming editions accompanied the CDs, with the album released digitally in North America the same day.

Revisited belongs to the same moment as Hobonichi's MOTHER Project, though it is not a Hobonichi release: 2020 and 2021 were the years the series' archive opened on every front at once, scripts, comics, exhibitions and now the score in its author's voice.

For the music shelf it is the essential modern record, the companion piece to the 1989 vocal album: same songs, once by a teenager in London studios, once by the man who wrote them.
