What is Rune Factory, and how is it related to Harvest Moon?

Rune Factory is the fantasy action RPG branch of the farm family, began in 2006 as a Harvest Moon spin off by Neverland for series creator Yasuhiro Wada, and now runs as its own Marvelous series.

Rune Factory launched for the Nintendo DS in Japan in August 2006, subtitled in Japan as a New Harvest Moon, and the kinship was the pitch: farming, seasons, town friendships, festivals, and marriage, inside a fantasy world of dungeons, monsters, and swords. You farmed in the fields and fought in caves, tamed monsters into barns where they watered crops and produced wool and eggs, and levelled both a farm and a fighter in one calendar.

The connection runs through people. Series creator Yasuhiro Wada conceived the spin off, and developer Neverland made the Rune Factory games while the main Bokujo Monogatari line continued at Marvelous. Wada described it as the other side of his farming idea: if Harvest Moon was the life he knew from the countryside, Rune Factory was that life inside the fantasy worlds he loved as a reader and player.

Neverland closed in 2013 and Rune Factory paused after its fourth entry, then returned under Marvelous directly with the Rune Factory 4 Special remaster, Rune Factory 5 in 2021, and Guardians of Azuma in 2025, which moved the setting to a Japanese inspired land. By then the spin off had fully become a sibling series, with its own audience, guides, and collecting shelf, no longer needing the Harvest Moon name it launched beside.

For collectors the relation is best shown physically: Japanese Rune Factory boxes from the DS forward, their guidebooks with dungeon maps beside crop charts, and the mainline Bokujo Monogatari shelf beside them. Two series, one farming heart, and a family tree that explains why so many farming games since carry a sword as naturally as a watering can.
