What is Saint Seiya Episode.G?

The Gold Saints’ own manga: a prequel drawn like a cathedral window.

Saint Seiya Episode.G is where the franchise’s second life began. Written and drawn by Megumu Okada under Kurumada’s authorisation, it ran in Akita Shoten’s Champion Red from December 19, 2002 to June 19, 2013, and was collected in twenty volumes, plus a later volume 0. Set seven years before the original manga, it hands the story to the Gold Saints, with Leo Aiolia at its centre and the Titans rising as its enemy gods.

HOW IT DIFFERS

Okada’s Saint Seiya
The art
Where Kurumada draws impact, Okada draws ornament: dense, stained-glass pages, armour rendered as filigree, battles staged like altarpieces. Episode.G is the most visually extravagant Saint Seiya ever printed.
The focus
The Bronze five barely appear. This is the Gold Saints as protagonists in their prime, a generation of heroes the original manga mostly showed as obstacles and martyrs.
The publishing trail
Champion Red, not Jump: Episode.G marks the franchise’s migration from Shueisha to Akita Shoten, the house that has published every Saint Seiya manga since.

THE SEQUELS

Assassin and Requiem
Episode.G Assassin · 2014–2019
Okada’s continuation, sixteen volumes, moving the G generation’s story into a stranger, time-crossed register.
Episode.G Requiem · 2020–
The third G series, begun in 2020, carrying the line past its twentieth year. The G shelf alone now rivals the original run in bulk.
The limited editions
Many Episode.G volumes shipped with limited editions alongside the regular ones, a two-track release pattern that gives collectors a second cover program to hunt inside the same series.
