What Is Samurai 8, Kishimoto's Manga After Naruto?

Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru is the manga Masashi Kishimoto created after Naruto: a science fiction samurai story written by Kishimoto and drawn by Akira Okubo, his former assistant, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from May 2019 to March 2020 and collected in five volumes.

The series was a major publishing event before it was a manga. Shueisha promoted it as the return of a Big Three author, previewed its first chapter internationally with simultaneous English release, and launched it with the kind of campaign usually reserved for anniversaries. Hachimaru, a frail boy kept alive by machines who dreams of becoming a samurai, meets a masterless cat samurai and a princess-linked destiny in a galaxy where samurai are cyborg protectors of Pandora's Box, the usual Kishimoto ingredients of disability, mentorship and cosmic stakes rearranged into science fiction.

The reception was divided and the run was short. Readers praised the ambition and Okubo's clean, dense art, a deliberate evolution of the late Naruto style, while pacing and exposition drew criticism, and the series ended at 43 chapters, far short of Naruto's shadow. Kishimoto's closing comments were gracious about the experiment, and the five-volume set stands complete as published.

Samurai 8 matters to a Naruto library for production reasons as much as story ones. It is the clearest look at Kishimoto as a writer-only creator, his storyboards and worldbuilding carried by an assistant he trained, which is the exact production model the mature Naruto pipeline had evolved toward. Okubo's art makes the book a footnote to Naruto's art history as well as its author's bibliography.

As a physical collectible the set is modest and complete: five Japanese volumes, five English volumes from Viz, and a first chapter magazine appearance in Jump's 2019 issues that Naruto issue collectors sometimes add as a companion piece. It is documented here as bibliography, not as a market call.

Series facts

Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru. Story: Masashi Kishimoto. Art: Akira Okubo. Weekly Shonen Jump, May 2019 to March 2020, 43 chapters, 5 volumes in Japanese and English.

Collector note

The complete set is short enough to shelve beside the Naruto art books as the author's post-Naruto chapter; the 2019 Jump issues carrying the launch are the period artifacts.
