What is Shadow Hearts: From the New World?

The series jumps to Prohibition America, hands the lead to a teenage detective, and closes the book.

From the New World (Japan 28 July 2005; North America 7 March 2006, published by Xseed; Europe 25 May 2007, by Ghostlight) is set in 1929. Johnny Garland, a young New York private eye who lost his family and his memories in a car crash, is saved from a monster by Shania, a Native American priestess who, like Yuri before her, fights by fusing with spirits. Their road runs from New York and Chicago to the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Area 51 and Machu Picchu, after a mute woman called Lady and the killer who adores her, while the Malice that Covenant let loose in the world keeps breeding monsters.

It is a spin-off by design: a new cast, a beginner-friendly door into the series, and Roger Bacon in support. Machida supplied the story concept but handed direction to Covenant’s art director Takamusa Ohsawa, and the game was finished on what the team called an extremely tight schedule. The battle system is Covenant’s, refined: the Stock gauge, double attacks, and Shania’s totem-fed Fusions in place of Yuri’s Graveyard.

THE LAST OF THE LINE

What to know about the third game
Lighter, on purpose
Production ran under a more controlled system than the first two games and the tone lightens with it: a ninja named Frank, a drunken master who is a cat, a mariachi gunman. Underneath, the story is about two resurrected children and what the Émigré Manuscript’s ritual did to them, which is as dark as anything in the series.
One DVD, and it showed
Covenant needed two DVDs; From the New World was squeezed onto one, which the developers noted caused storage problems. Load times fell and facial animation improved on the new engine, but the game is visibly the budget sibling.
Well reviewed, quietly sold
Critics received it generally well; the audience that had found Covenant did not all follow it to a new cast. It debuted to low sales and became, despite plans to continue the series, the last Shadow Hearts. The reasons are structural, and they are on the series-end page.
The Valentine connection
The party’s Hilda is a Valentine, of the vampire family that gave the earlier games Keith and Joachim. The series never stops rewarding players who came in at the beginning.
