What is Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town?

It is the full remake of the Game Boy Advance classic for Nintendo Switch, released in Japan in 2019 and in the West in 2020, rebuilding Mineral Town in 3D with new candidates and modern comforts.

Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town launched in Japan in October 2019 for the Nintendo Switch and in the West in July 2020. It remakes the 2003 GBA game, itself a remake of the PlayStation Back to Nature, so this Mineral Town is a town remade three times, and the remake treats that lineage with respect: same streets, same cast, same mine and festivals, rebuilt in gentle 3D with a new illustrated look for portraits and events.

Modern changes are careful. Two new marriage candidates join the cast, character designs were refreshed, the girl and boy farmer routes live in one game instead of two cartridges, livestock and crops gained quality of life systems, and same sex partnership was included in the Western release under the best friend system in Japan. The farm loop itself, the nine squares, the watering, the seasons, stays deliberately classic.

The remake matters in the market because it reset the series centre of gravity. It proved the classic template, rather than new systems, was the draw, and it set up the Wonderful Life remake that followed. Its Japanese release, Bokujo Monogatari Saikai no Mineral Town, came with the usual strong guidebook support, and the Western physical release at 49.99 dollars in the United States at the time of launch gave the series a Switch anchor years before a wholly new entry arrived.

Collecting this one is about the set, not the single box: GBA original, remake, and their guides in both languages form a twenty year conversation about one small town. Few farms in games can be studied across three hardware generations in print, and Mineral Town is the one where every version earned its place.
