What is the Bastard!! Netflix anime?

Thirty years later, the whole saga finally got animated, to a Coldrain soundtrack.

Announced on February 3, 2022, the new Bastard!! Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy is an original net animation by Liden Films, directed by Takaharu Ozaki, written by Yosuke Kuroda, with character designs by Sayaka Ono and music by Yasuharu Takanashi. Dark Schneider is voiced by Kisho Taniyama. Season one’s 24 episodes arrived on Netflix in two drops, thirteen on June 30, 2022 and eleven on September 15, 2022, covering the Dark Rebel Armies material the 1992 OVA had animated, and going beyond it. A second season, adapting the Hell’s Requiem arc, premiered on July 31, 2023 with fifteen episodes: 39 episodes in all.

The production wears the manga’s metal heart openly: both seasons open with songs by the metalcore band Coldrain (“Bloody Power Fame”, then “New Dawn”) and close with Tielle. In Japan the series also received television broadcasts on BS11 (from January 2023, and season two from January 2024), and Sentai Filmworks released the first season on Blu-ray in North America on January 21, 2025.
