What is The Book of Five Rings, and where is it in Vagabond?

It is the book the hero writes forty years after the manga begins, and the manga is the story of how he becomes able to write it.

In 1643, the historical Miyamoto Musashi withdrew to Reigando cave on Mount Iwato and composed The Book of Five Rings (Go Rin no Sho), five short scrolls on strategy, craft, and perception that close his teaching. He finished it in the second month of 1645 and died that June, leaving it, with the twenty-one precepts of the Dokkodo, to his closest disciple.

Vagabond, which opens in 1600, never reaches the cave; its Musashi is decades from authorship. But the Rings hang over the whole work as its known ending, the one document in which the wild boy of chapter 1 explains himself. Inoue's structure trusts the reader to hold both ends of the life at once.

THE BOOK AND THE MANGA

Written at the end of the road
What the book is
Five scrolls, Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void, on the principles of Musashi's school: stance, rhythm, timing, and the mind that holds them. Part manual, part philosophy, addressed to his students and finished weeks before his death.
Where it sits in the manga
Vagabond covers Musashi's youth and middle years, decades before the cave. The Book of Five Rings is therefore the manga's destination document: everything in it is the old man's summary of what the young man in these chapters is learning the hard way.
The Dokkodo
Beside the Rings stands the Dokkodo, The Path of Aloneness: twenty-one precepts for a life, bequeathed with the Rings to his closest disciple. Read the manga's farming chapters against it and the late Vagabond becomes a gloss on its author's own last page.
For readers
English translations of The Book of Five Rings are numerous and inexpensive; it is a short book. The collector's route is the same advice this archive gives for the manga: read it after Vagabond, and the treatise reads like a letter from the far end of the story.
