What is the Cell Saga?

It is the arc in which Trunks warns of killer androids, Dr. Gero's creations appear in shifting forms, and the bio-android Cell absorbs Androids 17 and 18 to reach perfection before Gohan defeats him at the Cell Games.

A stranger from the future kills Frieza in two strokes, then warns Goku: in three years, androids will kill everyone he loves, and Goku himself will die of a heart virus. The arc that follows is the most structurally complex Toriyama wrote, braiding two timelines, a second time machine, and a villain, Cell, who arrives as a cicada-like creature drinking cities and ends as a tournament host parodying the series' own traditions.

The villains changed during serialization under editorial advice, a process documented in the Library's page on Toriyama's editors: Androids 19 and 20 were replaced by 17 and 18, who were themselves partly displaced by Cell, whose second form was hurried to perfection. Knowing this makes the tankobon volumes read like a fossil record, with covers and chapter pacing preserving each change of plan.

The ending belongs to Gohan. Goku dies a second time, choosing to stay dead, and his eleven-year-old son, the pacifist scholar of the family, destroys Cell with one arm and his father's ghost at his shoulder. Japanese polls have ranked the moment among the most moving in the magazine's history, and it was drawn as a passing of the torch the next arc partly reverses.

For the shelf, Cell-era volumes are where the kanzenban and full color editions again earn their space, and where anime buyers face the widest gap between Z's pacing and Kai's. The arc's Japanese Jump issues are heavily collected because of the Gohan transformation chapter, which carried one of the era's most reproduced color pages.
