What is the Chimera Ant arc?

The Chimera Ant arc, volumes 18 to 30, pits humanity against evolving ant hybrids and centers on King Meruem's transformation through a board game champion, Komugi.

The Chimera Ant arc is Hunter x Hunter's longest movement, running through volumes 18 to 30 and episodes 76 to 136 of the 2011 anime, longer than the rest of the animated series' arcs combined. It begins as a monster story: a Chimera Ant queen washes ashore in the closed nation of NGL and begins consuming species, birthing soldier ants hybridized with what she eats, including, disastrously, humans, until her colony produces a King.

The King, Meruem, is the arc's dark center and Togashi's boldest creation: a being born to rule all life who finds his supremacy hollowed out by Komugi, a blind girl who is the world champion of Gungi, the fictional board game of her homeland, and the one human who can beat him at anything. Their matches, staged with the gravity of the arc's battles, turn a war story into an argument about what strength and worth actually are, and the arc's ending for both characters is among the most praised sequences in manga.

Around that center the war is fought by an extermination team of Hunters, including Gon and Killua, whose own arc within the arc is the series' darkest: Gon's grief over Kite, the mentor the ants kill and reanimate, drives him to a transformation bought with his entire potential, a sequence the anime renders as body horror and tragedy rather than triumph. Knuckle, Shoot, Morel and Netero, the Association's elderly chairman, carry the strategic war, which closes with Netero's duel against Meruem and a weapon whose name and nature are the arc's final, bleakest statement about humanity.

The 1999 anime never reached this arc; it exists on screen only in the 2011 version, whose unhurried 61 episode treatment, including a narration heavy invasion structure, divided viewers on broadcast and is now widely regarded as the series' summit. Togashi's art across these volumes shifts visibly, from dense battle draftsmanship to stark, minimal pages at the emotional peaks, a stylistic risk the tankobon preserve.

New readers should know the arc changes the series' temperature: horror, war ethics and long philosophical sieges replace the exam era's adventure. It is also the arc that most explains the fandom's patience with the hiatuses: having seen what Togashi builds when given time, readers wait for the next one.
