What is the Dark Tournament in Yu Yu Hakusho?
The Dark Tournament is the story arc at the center of Yu Yu Hakusho, running through manga volumes 6 to 13 and anime episodes 26 to 66. Its premise inverts a sports story: Yusuke's team is forced to enter a tournament in the Demon World, bankrolled by wealthy human criminals who bet on the matches, where losing teams routinely die and the winners earn one wish from the organizers.
Structurally it is the arc that taught a genre its grammar. Team battles proceed in rounds with individual duels, so every member of Team Urameshi, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei, plus the masked fighter Genkai, receives a showcase fight with its own tactic and cost. Togashi varies the rules round by round, rigged draws, handicaps, a drunken master, a fight fought on strategy alone, so the tournament never becomes a bracket recital.
The arc's gravity is Team Toguro, the reigning champions: the elder and younger Toguro brothers and their teammates, hired muscle with a buried connection to Genkai's past. Younger Toguro, a human who traded his humanity for demonic power and eternal youth, is the series' great antagonist, and his escalating percentages of power, 30, 60, 80, 100 and beyond, became a template battle manga still quotes. The final, Yusuke against Toguro at full power, is the series' most famous fight and its emotional thesis about what strength costs.
The anime version expanded the arc with additional matches and crowd scenes and is many fans' preferred form of it; the tournament's island setting, Hanging Neck Island in the usual translation, and its human audience of gamblers give the anime room for the series' darkest satire of spectatorship. Togashi was, pointedly, writing about his own audience and industry while producing the arc under weekly pressure.
For collectors, the arc is why the middle volumes and the anime's Dark Tournament box sets carry the franchise: the Five disc era DVD sets in North America were literally branded by tournament rounds. If a reader samples one stretch of this series, it is this one, the tournament that later tournaments are measured against.
