What is the Death Note musical?

Death Note: The Musical is a stage musical with music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Jack Murphy and book by Ivan Menchell, which premiered in Tokyo in 2015 in Japanese and has since been staged in South Korea and, in concert form, in London in 2023.

The musical's existence surprises newcomers, but its pedigree is Broadway's: Frank Wildhorn, composer of Jekyll and Hyde, built the score, and the project was developed in English, with English demo recordings circulating officially years before any English language full production. The show compresses the manga's first arc into an evening built around Light and L's duel, ending at the confrontation the story's first half demands.

The world premiere came in Tokyo in April 2015, in Japanese, with a double cast Light, a pattern Japanese productions use to sustain long runs, and the production's success established the show's unusual geography: an American written musical about a Japanese manga that has lived its stage life mainly in Asia. South Korean productions followed and became major hits in Seoul's musical market, where the show is a recurring property.

London heard it in concert in 2023 at the Palladium and then the Lyric, staged concert performances with a West End caliber cast that played to intense fan demand and strong notices, the closest the English version has come to a full production. Recordings remain a patchwork: the Japanese cast album documents the premiere, while the English demos carry Wildhorn's original presentation of the songs.

The songs themselves are the argument for the show: numbers for Light's god complex, L's suspicion and the shinigami's boredom translate Ohba's logic games into the musical's grammar of opposed anthems, and fan circulation of the demos kept the property alive in English for a decade without a production to attach to.

For this shelf the musical completes Death Note's adaptation set, manga, anime, prose, film, television drama and stage, an unusually full media map for twelve volumes of story, and its programs, cast albums and posters are the physical layer this library records alongside the books.
