What is the Dragon Slave?
The most famous spell in anime is a loan: Lina’s city-killer borrows its power from the Dark Lord she keeps fighting.
The Dragon Slave is Lina Inverse’s signature spell and the loudest joke in the series’ design: a blast that can level a city, powered by Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu, the supreme demon of Lina’s world. That is how black magic works in Slayers. It does not generate power; it petitions it, calling directly on demons, which is why the world’s greatest anti-demon weapon runs on a demon’s strength.
The novels build the system in four schools, and then put two spells above the system entirely, both drawing on the Lord of Nightmares, the creator of Lina’s world and three others.
THE FOUR SCHOOLS
How magic works hereBlack magic
Power borrowed from demons: the Dragon Slave from Shabranigdu himself. Enormous, and priced accordingly.
White magic
Healing and protection, of obscure origin, the province of shrine maidens like Sylphiel and Amelia.
Shamanistic magic
The elements and the astral plane: Fireball, Lei Wing, Elemekia Lance. The workhorse school, and one of the few ways to wound a demon.
Holy magic
The gods’ own power, sealed away inside the demon barrier for most of the story, unusable until Hellmaster Phibrizzo’s death.
ABOVE THE SYSTEM
The Lord of Nightmares’ spellsRagna Blade
A blade of darkness that cuts through any obstacle or being. Lina’s answer when the Dragon Slave is not enough, or not allowed.
Giga Slave
The perfected form can kill anything, and a miscast one can unmake the world. In novel 8 Lina casts it under duress and it does something worse than fail: it arrives, wearing her, and the Lord of Nightmares deals with Hellmaster personally.
The world underneath
A thousand years before the story, one of Shabranigdu’s seven sealed fragments woke inside the sorcerer Lei Magnus and fought the Resurrection War against the Water Dragon King, who sealed him in ice in the Kataart Mountains and sank, exhausted, into the Sea of Chaos. Every spell Lina casts is borrowed from one side or other of that unfinished war.
