What is the Dressrosa saga?

It is the New World's first full saga, in which the crew allies with Trafalgar Law to bring down Doflamingo, the Warlord who usurped Dressrosa's throne and turned half its people into toys erased from memory, ending with seven crews swearing loyalty as the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.

Dressrosa is Spain filtered through Oda, bullfighting colosseum, flamenco, architecture drawn from Gaudi's Barcelona and the Alhambra, wrapped around the series' darkest political mechanism: Sugar's fruit turns people into toys and erases them from the memories of everyone who loved them, so the kingdom's happy surface is built on forgotten husbands, fathers, and soldiers. The toy soldier Kyros, the kingdom's erased hero, carries the arc's emotional case.

Doflamingo is the saga's study: a fallen Celestial Dragon turned underworld broker, supplying weapons and artificial Devil Fruits to Kaido, whose family backstory and Law's own past, the dying boy saved by Doflamingo's brother Corazon, give the arc its second engine. Corazon's silent sacrifice, drawn largely without dialogue, is the flashback this saga is remembered by, and Gear Fourth, Luffy's elastic reimagining of his own power, debuts in the final duel as the series' new combat grammar.

The saga is also the series' great reunion: Sabo, alive, appears at the colosseum fighting for Ace's Flame-Flame Fruit, and the tournament's losers become the seven captains of the Grand Fleet, an alliance structure that changes what the endgame can field. At roughly ten volumes (70 to 80), it is the longest single-island saga in the manga, and its length, in both book and anime, is the standard exhibit in pacing discussions.

Physical collecting follows that scale: the Dressrosa tankobon run is a shelf block of its own, the colosseum volumes carry tournament poster-style covers, and the anime version's episode count exceeds the manga's chapter count nearly one to one, a fact the Library's filler and pacing coverage uses as its benchmark case.
