What is the Franklin Badge?

The series' smallest object and its most portable symbol: lightning insurance, in fiction and in metal.

The Franklin Badge is a recurring item in all three Mother games: worn or carried, it reflects lightning attacks back at their source. Its name is the joke and the history lesson at once, honoring Benjamin Franklin's kite experiment, electricity's most famous piece of folk science.

Its appearances are load-bearing. In Mother, Pippi gives it to Ninten. In EarthBound, Paula carries it into the fight against Mr. Carpainter, whose lightning is the battle's whole threat. In Mother 3 the object arrives by transformation: a Mr. Saturn polishes Lucas's Courage Badge until it shines into a Franklin Badge, and in the final battle it reflects Claus's lightning at the story's decisive moment.

Twice, the badge has crossed into the physical world. Nintendo packed a Franklin Badge pin into the Mother 3 Deluxe Box in 2006, and Hobonichi's MOTHER Project later sold its own replica, repeatedly restocked after sellouts, alongside Starman and Mr. Saturn lapel pins; the design also anchors a Hobonichi Techo cover and a backpack in the current line.

For collectors it is the perfect series token: small, metal, identical in silhouette across thirty years of merchandise, and legible to any fan at a glance.
