What is the Frieza Saga?

It is the Namek arc, in which the heroes race Frieza's empire for the Namekian Dragon Balls, Vegeta turns temporary ally, and Goku's rage at Krillin's death triggers the first Super Saiyan transformation in manga history.

With Piccolo dead and Earth's Dragon Balls gone, the survivors travel to planet Namek for the original set, and find Frieza already there, methodically torturing villages for them. The arc is a three-way scramble among Frieza's army, Vegeta hunting immortality for himself, and the Earthlings hiding and striking, with the Ginyu Force arriving midway as Toriyama's affectionate parody of the sentai hero shows he grew up on.

The climax rewrote shonen manga. Frieza's successive transformations, Goku's arrival, the death of Krillin, and the Super Saiyan awakening drawn with blank eyes and upright hair became the template every rival magazine studied. Toriyama has said the form also solved a practical problem: it saved his assistant the time of inking Goku's hair black in every panel.

The Namek volumes sit at the commercial peak of the manga. Japanese tankobon sales for the series passed 160 million copies in Japan alone, and the Frieza stretch is the part most often singled out in Shueisha's anniversary reissues, including the full color edition, where Namek's green sky and the transformation's gold make the strongest case for color printing.

Physical copies reward attention: the kanzenban gives the long fight its largest reproduction, the full color volumes are the only official color printing of the complete fight, and early Viz Z volumes split the arc across more, thinner books than the Japanese run. Anime buyers should know the original Z telling stretches the arc famously, while Kai compresses it to roughly half the episodes.
