What is the Hunter Exam arc?
The Hunter Exam arc is where Hunter x Hunter begins, running through manga volumes 1 to 5 and the first 21 episodes of the 2011 anime, with the 1999 anime devoting its opening stretch to the same material. Gon Freecss, twelve years old and raised on Whale Island, leaves home to take the Hunter Exam, the licensing ordeal for the world's elite adventurer profession, following his absent father Ging, one of the Association's legends.
The exam is structured as a sequence of sadistic filters run by different examiners: an endurance run through tunnels and the Numere Wetlands behind the trickster Satotz, a cooking test under the Gourmet Hunters Menchi and Buhara that fails the entire field before being regraded, a descent through Trick Tower's prisoner duels, a hunt on Zevil Island where applicants stalk each other's badges, and a final tournament with a single twist, that the winners are those who make their opponents surrender, and only one entrant can fail.
The arc's cast assembly is its real work. Gon's team forms on the road: Kurapika, last of the Kurta clan, Leorio, the would be doctor whose bluster hides the series' warmest heart, and Killua Zoldyck, a bored assassin heir the same age as Gon, whose friendship with him becomes the series' emotional spine. Across the field stands Hisoka, the magician whose interest in Gon curdles the exam from adventure into danger, and Illumi, Killua's brother, hiding in plain sight.
Togashi uses the exam to teach the reader his rules: tests reward lateral thinking over strength, examiners are characters rather than gates, and victory conditions keep inverting. The badge hunt phase, effectively a small battle royale about information and nerve, previews the strategic fighting the series will perfect once Nen arrives two arcs later.
Both anime adapt the arc faithfully, with the 1999 version lingering longer in early atmosphere and adding small filler scenes, and the 2011 version moving at the manga's pace. As an opening movement it remains a model of its kind: by the exam's end, every major relationship in the series exists, and none of them is simple.
