What Is the Megastructure in Blame!?

The Megastructure is the floor of the world, stacked in layers to the orbit of Jupiter, and almost nothing can break it.

In Blame! the setting has a name of its own: the City, a single construction grown out of Earth by robot Builders who lost their instructions. Nihei has suggested its diameter is at least the size of Jupiter’s orbit, some 1.6 billion kilometers, and the manga shows the evidence: at one point Killy crosses an empty spherical room roughly the size of Jupiter itself, the space where a planet used to be.

The Megastructure is the material of that world: the layered scaffold floors that divide the City into levels, lit from beneath in a slow artificial day and night. It is functionally indestructible. A direct blast from a Gravitational Beam Emitter is one of the only things in the story that can pierce it, which is why Killy’s small gun matters at the scale of planets.

INSIDE THE CITY

How the world is stacked
Layers like Dyson spheres
The City reads as concentric shells: floor above floor, each ceiling the next level’s ground, most of it empty, all of it still growing at the edges.
The Jupiter room
One spherical chamber in the manga is drawn at the scale of Jupiter. The implication is quiet and total: the planet was dismantled and used as building material.
Relativistic elevators
Even the City’s lifts, which can approach light speed, take subjective ages to cross it. Journeys in Blame! are measured in years and centuries, and the 14 year gap in the later volumes is a rounding error.
Toha Heavy Industries
A megastructure inside the Megastructure: a cylindrical corporate arcology with its own AI, Mensab, standing apart from the Administration that nominally rules the Netsphere.

WHO RUNS IT

Nobody, and that is the horror
The Builders
Construction robots still executing the last standing order: build. Without a human logged into the Netsphere to direct them, they build chaotically and forever.
The Netsphere and the Authority
The control network still exists, administered by an Authority that can advise and equip Killy but cannot simply switch off its own defenses.
The Safeguard
The Netsphere’s security force, degraded into a single rule: any human without the Net Terminal Gene is an intruder. The City is not haunted. It is administered, badly, by its own immune system.

WHY IT LEAVES MANGA

The word at large
A builder drew it
Nihei worked in construction and studied design in New York before manga. The Megastructure is drawn by someone who knows how structures actually go together, and readers in architecture and design noticed early.
Megalomania, 2000
Three years into the run, Nihei published Megalomania, a book of megastructure artwork: the City was already a design object in its own right, outside the story.
The design afterlife
Game designers and architects now use Blame! as the reference point for buildable immensity, from indie exploration games to a typeface: in 2024 Nihei released a font named for Toha Heavy Industries, the fictional corporation inside the City.
