What is the Mother 3 Deluxe Box?
Alongside the standard release on April 20, 2006, Nintendo sold the Mother 3 Deluxe Box in limited quantities at ¥18,000 (about $151 at the time). It bundled three things: the Mother 3 game, a special-edition Game Boy Micro, and a Franklin Badge pin, the series' signature item made real.
The Micro is the centerpiece. It is finished in Mother 3 red with the game's wood-and-metal logo, and its faceplate art does something no other special-edition hardware does: it prints the wear of use into the design itself, with thumb-worn patches around the D-pad and buttons, a machine that looks loved from the day it is opened. Collector coverage of the piece, including Nintendo Wire's, singles out that pre-worn artwork as the detail that makes it.
The Franklin Badge completes the set's logic. In the games the badge reflects lightning and saves its wearer at the story's turning points; in the Deluxe Box it is a physical pin packed beside the hardware, the first time the object crossed from the screen into a buyer's hand, years before Hobonichi sold its own replica.
Because the Deluxe Box was limited and Japan-only, it is the Mother 3 shelf's anchor object: the standard game is common, but the red Micro and its box are the pieces that complete sets are judged by.
