What Is the Naruto Kabuki Play?

The Naruto kabuki is a full-scale adaptation of the manga staged at Tokyo's Shinbashi Enbujo in August 2018, part of the Super Kabuki program that restages contemporary stories in classical form, with Bando Minosuke as Naruto and Nakamura Hayato as Sasuke.

Kabuki adaptations of manga, called Super Kabuki II in this line, rebuild a modern story inside centuries-old stagecraft: mie poses in place of splash pages, revolving stages and trap lifts for transformations, traditional instrumentation under the dialogue, and actors trained from childhood in the form's physical vocabulary. The Naruto production retold the story through the Sasuke recovery and the brothers' conflict in that language, with Kishimoto's blessing and the manga's iconography translated rather than copied, fox fire, headbands and hand signs rendered as classical stage business.

The casting carried the meaning. Minosuke and Hayato are heirs of major kabuki houses, and their performances were reviewed as serious kabuki, not novelty casting, by the theater press of the run. The production's success, a sold and extended engagement with a later cinema and home release in Japan, demonstrated the franchise's absorption into Japan's mainstream cultural institutions fifteen years after it was a magazine upstart.

Alongside the stage musical documented elsewhere in this section, the kabuki completes a pair: the same manga interpreted by Japan's newest stage movement and by its oldest. Few modern series receive both treatments, and the contrast, acrobatic pop spectacle against classical form, is the documentation point of the two pages read together.

Artifacts of the kabuki are theater artifacts: the Enbujo program, posters in the production's ukiyo-e influenced design, and the home release. They sit at the far, institutional end of the Naruto collecting spectrum, where a phone-book weekly's hero ends up on the classical stage, which is exactly why the Library keeps a page for them.

Collector note

The production's poster and program art, drawn in a classical idiom, are the run's signature paper goods and unlike any other Naruto merchandise design line.
