What is the Red Ribbon Army Saga?

It is the manga arc following the 21st World Tournament, in which Goku hunts Dragon Balls across the world while destroying the Red Ribbon Army base by base, a story the Cell saga later builds on directly.

After the first tournament, Goku sets off alone to find the Four-Star Dragon Ball that was his grandfather's keepsake, and every step of the search brings him against the Red Ribbon Army, a private military hunting the same balls for Commander Red. The arc is a world tour: Muscle Tower in the snow, pirates and a submarine chase, the Sacred Land of Korin, and a final one-boy assault on Red Ribbon headquarters.

The saga plants the longest seeds in the series. Android 8 befriends Goku in Muscle Tower, and the army's scientist Dr. Gero is named here in passing, decades before he returns as the creator of the androids and Cell in Dragon Ball Z. Mercenary Tao's defeat of Goku, and Goku's three-day climb and training at Korin Tower to surpass him, establish the training-as-power pattern the whole franchise repeats.

Physically, the arc spans the middle volumes of the original 42-volume tankobon run, and its covers shift from group adventure art to Goku alone against machines and soldiers, a visible record of the series hardening from gag adventure into action manga. The anime expanded the arc with extra episodes, so anime-only Red Ribbon material is a common point of confusion for readers comparing editions.

Collectors value this stretch for first appearances in print: Android 8, Korin, Tao Pai Pai, and the first hints of the android storyline. Japanese guidebooks treat the arc as the end of Dragon Ball's first era, and the Daizenshuu chronology volumes give it some of their densest timeline pages.
