What is the Vampire Hunter D manga?

A manga that launched on the same day in Tokyo and America, then nearly lost its own ending in English.

The manga is Saiko Takaki's adaptation of Kikuchi's novels, serialised in Media Factory's Monthly Comic Flapper. The ambition was the whole catalogue, novel by novel. What got drawn, between 2007 and 2014, was the 1980s shelf: eight volumes covering the first eight novels' territory.

It was built as a world release from the start. Volume 1 appeared on 24 October 2007 simultaneously in Japan and the United States, with editions following in Spain, Italy, Germany, Finland, and Hungary: a rollout modelled on the Bloodlust strategy of treating the West as a first market, not an afterthought.

THE AMERICAN SNAG

Volume 8 and the long wait
The cancellation
Digital Manga Publishing, the American publisher, was reported in November 2015 to have cancelled the print release of volume 8 with no plans to bring it out. The English manga ended one volume short for years.
Digital first
Volume 8 reached English readers digitally on 17 April 2018 through Kadokawa's BookWalker platform.
Print, at last · January 2023
A physical English volume 8 finally appeared in January 2023, nine years after the Japanese original: the single most awkward gap on the English D shelf.

THE RETURN

The Rose Princess, 2024
A ninth novel, drawn
In July 2024 Asahi Shimbun Publishing announced a manga of the ninth novel, The Rose Princess, with Takaki returning to the drawing board. Serialisation began on 31 July 2024 on the Sonorama+ platform.
The other manga
There is also a one-shot: Vampire Hunter Tale: The Hunter in White (2004), written by Kikuchi and drawn by Ai Kozaki for a Kawade Shobo Shinsha special edition, about a hunter in white who is D's visual opposite.
