What is the Yu Yu Hakusho kanzenban edition?
The kanzenban, literally the complete edition, is Shueisha's prestige repackaging of Yu Yu Hakusho: 15 large format volumes published in Japan across 2004 and 2005, a decade after the manga ended. Where the tankobon were built for weekly readers catching up, the kanzenban was built for the permanent shelf, with heavier paper, bigger pages and binding meant to be opened flat and kept.
Its headline feature is on the outside. Togashi returned to draw an entirely new cover for every volume, and the covers are the edition's argument by themselves: the same cast rendered with ten more years of craft, moodier and more painterly than the bright action group shots of the 1990s tankobon. Fans who own both sets usually display the kanzenban for exactly this reason.
Inside, the edition restores the color pages from the Weekly Shonen Jump serialization that the tankobon printed in black and white, corrects and cleans the art reproduction, and repaginates the 175 chapters into the 15 volume flow. Bonus material and author commentary from the original run are gathered more completely than in the tankobon, making the kanzenban the documentary edition as well as the deluxe one.
No English edition exists. Viz's license covers the tankobon text, and the kanzenban has never been licensed in English, so Western collectors import it as an art object and read alongside their English singles. Prices reflect that role: the set trades as a premium import, with complete runs in clean condition commanding several times the cost of a Japanese tankobon set.
Identification is easy in photos: kanzenban volumes are visibly larger than tankobon, carry the new solo character covers rather than group scenes, and count to 15. A listing showing slim books with 1990s group art is the tankobon whatever its title claims, and the premium belongs only to the big books.
