What Japanese Zelda soundtrack CDs were released?
The shelf starts in 1998. Ocarina of Time's Japanese soundtrack, released by Pony Canyon on December 18, 1998, squeezes 82 tracks onto a single disc, at a retail price of ¥2,548 (about $22 at the time). The American edition offered through Nintendo Power held only 35 tracks, with different packaging: the pattern of the whole soundtrack story in one comparison.
The modern sets grew to match the games. Breath of the Wild's original soundtrack, from Nippon Columbia on April 25, 2018, runs to five discs and 211 tracks including the downloadable content music. The standard edition was ¥5,000 plus tax (about $49 at the time); the limited first edition, at ¥7,000 plus tax (about $67 at the time), added a Play Button music player preloaded with the game's field music.
Skyward Sword waited a decade for its full release: five discs and 187 tracks on November 23, 2021, for the game's tenth anniversary, its limited edition adding a music box that plays the Ballad of the Goddess. Tears of the Kingdom has since received its own multi disc Japanese soundtrack.
The concert hall belongs on the shelf too. Zelda Concert 2018, recorded live on December 14, 2018 at Bunkamura Orchard Hall in Tokyo, was released by Columbia as a two disc album the following year. The objects differ, disc, player, music box, concert recording, but the habit is one: in Japan, Zelda music is something you own.
