What Shadow Hearts strategy guides are there?
Fewer than you would think, from more publishers than you would expect.
The assumption runs that BradyGames covered the trilogy. It did not. In English, only two of the four games received official guides at all, and they came from rival houses: BradyGames for Covenant and Prima for From the New World. The first Shadow Hearts and Koudelka were left to fend for themselves in English, while Japan, as usual, documented everything. For the owner of a store that hunts Japanese guidebooks, this shelf is the series in microcosm.
THE ENGLISH GUIDES
Two books, two publishersCovenant · BradyGames, 2004
Shadow Hearts: Covenant Official Strategy Guide, by Rick Barba and Kathleen Pleet: 176 pages, ISBN 9780744004830, list price $14.99. Full walkthrough, bestiary with weaknesses, item lists, and the side quests for every character’s final weapons and armour, the content Covenant players actually need. Out of print; asking prices for new copies have spiked into the hundreds in recent marketplace snapshots.
From the New World · Prima, 2006
Shadow Hearts: From the New World (Prima Official Game Guide), by Adam Pavlacka: 256 pages, ISBN 9780761552956, March 2006. Maps with hidden items, complete monster and boss statistics, the Stellar Chart system explained, every side quest and Ring Fragment. Prima’s cover copy sells the mood honestly: “Malice is out, monsters are loose, and you’re having a bad hair day.”
Shadow Hearts (2001) · no English guide
Midway’s first game shipped without one. English-speaking players in 2001 had magazine coverage and each other. Europe got a partial remedy: the PAL release included a mini strategy guide booklet, documented in MobyGames’ UK cover scans.
Koudelka · no English guide
The prequel never received an English guide either. Its secrets travelled by word of mouth, which suited it.
