What was Romance Dawn?

Romance Dawn is the title of two prototype one-shot manga Oda published in 1996, a year before One Piece began, testing Luffy, the pirate premise, and the series' themes in two different drafts that are both collected in his short story volume Wanted.

The first version ran in the summer 1996 Weekly Shonen Jump special edition; the second, revised and closer to the series, ran in the main magazine that autumn. Both star a straw-hatted Luffy with the Gum-Gum powers and the dream of becoming a pirate king of a peaceful kind, but their worlds differ: the first features the sorcerer-adjacent Crescent Moon Gally as antagonist and a mystical tone, the second sharpens the pirate politics and introduces the silhouette of the series' structure, including an early Shanks figure in all but name.

Romance Dawn is also the name Oda gave One Piece's first chapter and first anime episode, and the series has honored the prototype repeatedly, most fully in the 2019 animated special Episode of Romance Dawn materials and the 2019 one-shot's reprint programs around the manga's anniversaries. The name itself, dawn of romance in the older sense of adventure story, became the franchise's term for beginnings, reused for the live-action season's framing and the remake's publicity.

For readers, the prototypes are the rarest kind of document: a masterpiece's drafts, public in its author's own lifetime and in his own collection. Wanted, the 1998 short story volume containing both versions alongside Monsters and Oda's other pre-serialization work, is therefore the foundational book of any One Piece shelf, the volume the Library's Wanted coverage treats as volume zero.

Original magazine appearances of the 1996 one-shots are true rarities in the Jump back-issue market, while the Wanted collection keeps the texts themselves cheap and available in both Japanese and English. Buy Wanted to read; chase the magazines only with a Jump collection already underway.
