Where was Fullmetal Alchemist published?

Fullmetal Alchemist ran monthly in Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan from July 2001 to June 2010, an unusual home that gave Arakawa room to plan.

Fullmetal Alchemist was serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan, a shonen magazine published by Square Enix, beginning with the magazine's August 2001 issue and ending in July 2010. That address surprises readers who assume every 2000s hit ran in Weekly Shonen Jump. Gangan was a smaller, monthly magazine, home also to series such as Soul Eater, and Fullmetal Alchemist became its flagship and best selling title by a wide margin.

The monthly schedule is written into the manga's bones. Arakawa delivered roughly 40 pages a month instead of 19 pages a week, so chapters are long, self contained movements with room for both action and quiet scenes, and arcs resolve in fewer, denser chapters. The nine year run produced 108 chapters that fill 27 volumes, a ratio weekly series rarely match, and the breathing room is part of why the story's setup and payoff structure feels so deliberate.

Monthly serialization also let Arakawa plan in public. She has described knowing the ending's shape early and working backward, and the Gangan schedule, with its longer lead times and annual planning, suited that method. The magazine promoted the series heavily, with color pages, cover features and anniversary illustrations that now fill the art books, and the 2003 anime adaptation arrived just two years into the run, an unusually fast vote of confidence.

The two anime exist partly because of this magazine calendar. A monthly manga produces story slowly, so the 2003 weekly television series caught up and had to invent its second half, while by 2009 enough chapters existed for Brotherhood to adapt the whole arc. The gap between the manga's pace and television's appetite is the single fact that explains the franchise's unusual two anime shape.

Gangan copies of key issues, the August 2001 debut and the July 2010 finale, are collected in Japan as magazine artifacts, usually with their supplements and cover features intact. For English readers the magazine itself was never translated, so its presence in a collection is as a physical object: the place where the chapters first appeared, a month at a time.
