Who are the main boxers in Hajime no Ippo?

The core is the Kamogawa Boxing Gym, Ippo Makunouchi, Mamoru Takamura, Masaru Aoki, Tatsuya Kimura and coach Genji Kamogawa, set against the rivals who define each era, above all Ichiro Miyata, Takeshi Sendo, Ryo Mashiba and Eiji Date.

Ippo Makunouchi begins as a bullied teenager who carries his family's fishing boat business on his back, which is literally his training: hauling catches built the legs and shoulders that make him an infighter. His question, what does it mean to be strong, is the series' engine. In the ring he is a peek-a-boo pressure fighter whose weapons, the Liver Blow, the Gazelle Punch and the Dempsey Roll, are dramatized on their own pages across this shelf.

Mamoru Takamura is the gym's sun: a multi weight world champion of obscene talent and worse manners, the series' comic engine and its ceiling, the proof of what Kamogawa's gym can produce. Coach Genji Kamogawa, a wartime prizefighter whose own story Rising finally animated, is the moral center; his fists, ruined by postwar bare knuckle prize fights, are the series' symbol of what boxing costs.

The rivals are written as co-protagonists. Ichiro Miyata, the counter punching stylist whose father and Ippo's promise bind the whole run, is the deferred final exam. Takeshi Sendo, the Naniwa Tiger, is Ippo's beloved brawler mirror and twice his title opponent. Ryo Mashiba, the flicker jab executioner, and Eiji Date, the veteran whose heartbreak shot comeback defines the series' middle, each carry arcs that could headline their own manga.

The second gym generation, Aoki and Kimura with their joke techniques and genuine heartbreak, Manabu Itagaki the speedster junior, and later world figures like Ricardo Martinez, the featherweight super champion modeled on real greatness, and Wally and Volg Zangief from overseas, keep the cast's world widening as the decades pass.

For new readers the cast is the commitment and the reward: Morikawa writes opponents for a year before Ippo fights them, so the roster reads like a boxing almanac of fully lived careers. The anime seasons page in this shelf shows how much of this cast the adaptation reached, and the gap between the two is the manga's best argument.
