Who Are the Seven Seals and the Seven Angels?

Two armies of seven, chosen by prophecy, fighting over one city and one boy’s decision.

Every fighter in X belongs to one of two prophecies. The Dragons of Heaven, also called the Seven Seals, defend Tokyo's spiritual barriers, its kekkai, and with them the human world as it is. The Dragons of Earth, the Seven Angels, are sworn to break those same barriers and bring the promised end. Each Dragon of Heaven who still has someone precious can raise a barrier; lose that person, and the power goes with them.

Above both armies stand the dreamgazers: Princess Hinoto, blind and dreaming beneath the National Diet Building for the Dragons of Heaven, and her younger sister Kanoe, who reads those dreams without permission and serves the Dragons of Earth.

THE SEVEN SEALS

Dragons of Heaven
Kamui Shiro
The one who decides. A powerful esper whose choice fixes which army he leads, and whose refusal creates his opposite. He chooses Heaven, to protect Fuma and Kotori.
Sorata Arisugawa
A monk of Mount Koya, raised on a prophecy that he would serve Kamui and die for a woman. Cheerful, electric, and the heart of the group.
Arashi Kishu
The hidden priestess of Ise, who keeps a sacred sword inside her left hand and her feelings under the same discipline.
Subaru Sumeragi
The thirteenth head of the Sumeragi onmyoji clan, carried over from Tokyo Babylon with his grief for his twin sister Hokuto intact.
Seiichiro Aoki
A gentle wind user with a wife and child, the only Seal whose ordinary family life is shown as something worth the world’s saving.
Karen Kasumi
A fire user who works in Tokyo’s nightlife and hides a childhood spent feared by her own mother for her powers.
Yuzuriha Nekoi
A fourteen-year-old heir of the Mitsumine shrine, paired with Inuki, a spirit dog only people with power can see.

THE SEVEN ANGELS

Dragons of Earth
Fuma Monou
The other Kamui. Kamui’s warm, dependable best friend, until Kamui’s choice wakes the second personality sleeping in him and he becomes Heaven’s enemy and Earth’s leader.
Yuto Kigai
A courteous civil servant who commands water and treats the apocalypse as an interesting assignment.
Satsuki Yatoji
A girl who talks to computers and lets the machine Beast fight for her, having concluded early that people are a disappointment.
Seishiro Sakurazuka
The Sakurazukamori, an assassin onmyoji from Tokyo Babylon, whose unfinished game with Subaru follows him into the end of the world.
Nataku
A clone grown from a dead girl’s cells, sexless, ageless, and learning what a wish is from the two people it calls mother and father.
Kusanagi Shiyu
A soldier of the Self-Defense Force who hears the pain of plants and joined Earth to end humanity’s damage, yet keeps rescuing Yuzuriha.
Kakyo Kuzuki
A dreamgazer in a coma since boyhood, kept prisoner for his visions, who asks only to be allowed to die. In the 1996 film he is replaced by an invented water master, Shogo Asagi.

THE DESIGN

Why seven and seven
Symmetry as plot
Ohkawa chose matched sevens so every Seal could cast a shadow on the other side: two Kamuis, two dreamgazer sisters, two onmyoji houses, two sacred swords born from two women’s deaths.
The tarot key
CLAMP assigned the cast to the major arcana and printed one tarot illustration in each volume. Kamui stands as The Magician; the full set runs to nineteen cards with The Fool from the first art book.
Barriers and wishes
The system runs on two currencies: kekkai, raised only by those protecting someone, and wishes, which Fuma in his Kamui state grants in their most destructive form.
