Who continues Berserk after Kentaro Miura?
When Kentaro Miura died in May 2021, Berserk stood unfinished at 41 volumes, in the middle of the Fantasia arc, and no announcement about its future was made for a year. In June 2022 Hakusensha and the Young Animal editorial department announced the series would resume, and they explained the arrangement in unusual detail, because they knew readers would ask exactly the question this page answers.
The drawing is by Studio Gaga, Miura's own team of assistants, whose work and role are covered in their own entry in this hub. The supervision is by Kouji Mori, a professional manga artist in his own right and Miura's close friend since high school. Mori has stated that Miura told him the story's planned course through to its ending, in conversations across their long friendship, and that he would allow only what Miura had related to be drawn.
The publisher supported the account: Miura had also discussed the story's direction with his editors and studio, and design materials and memos remained. The resumed chapters first completed the Fantasia arc material already underway, and the first post Miura collected volume, volume 42, appeared in Japan in 2023, credited to Miura as original work with Studio Gaga drawing and Mori supervising.
How to catalogue it, for the collectors this Library serves: volumes 1 to 41 are Miura's Berserk. From volume 42 the books are the continuation, made by his studio and his friend under a stated fidelity to his plan. Both facts belong on the shelf card, and the Library's Berserk section keeps the two runs clearly separated.
