Who created Harvest Moon?

Harvest Moon was created by Yasuhiro Wada, a producer raised in the Japanese countryside, who built the 1996 original at Pack-In-Video from his childhood memories of farm life and his love of games without fighting.

Yasuhiro Wada grew up in the countryside of Yamaguchi in Japan, and Harvest Moon is his autobiography in systems. The fields, the animals, the small town where everyone knew each other, and the seasonal rhythm of rural work became, in 1996 at developer Pack-In-Video, Bokujo Monogatari. Wada has said he wanted the feeling of that life, its patience and its small satisfactions, made playable for city players who had never touched soil.

His design instincts ran against the era. Mid nineties games competed on action, and Wada, who has described preferring Derby Stallion and simulation to combat RPGs, bet that tending could be as compelling as fighting. The bet shaped everything: no enemies, no fail scream, just weather, stamina, seasons, and a community that slowly opens its heart as you work. The first games modest sales and long word of mouth proved the instinct right on a delay.

Wada stayed the series guardian through its growth at Victor Interactive and Marvelous, produced its expansions across every Nintendo and Sony console, and conceived Rune Factory as its fantasy sibling. He later founded Toybox Inc. and made smaller pastoral games in the same spirit. Through every corporate change above the series, his authorship is the continuity the Bokujo Monogatari name actually guarantees.

For a Library, Wada authorship is the thread that survives the naming split. Story of Seasons boxes carry his series. Rune Factory carries his spin off. The Natsume developed Harvest Moon games, whatever their merits, do not carry his hand, and knowing the creator is the fastest way to read any farm shelf and know which games belong to the original story.
