Who did the art for the Berserk anime?

Three different design teams across three adaptations, all translating Miura's manga drawings, and none of them drawn by Miura himself.

As with the other hubs in this Artists Wing, the credit question has two halves. Kentaro Miura is Berserk's manga artist and the source of every design. The anime adaptations were made by studios whose character designers rebuilt his drawings into model sheets that animation teams could reproduce, and each adaptation made different choices about how much of his density could survive on screen.

The 1997 television series, produced by OLM, used character designs by Yoshihiko Umakoshi and covers the Golden Age arc. Its look is the closest broadcast equivalent of the manga's 1990s style, hand drawn, heavy shadowed and deliberately limited in motion, and it remains the adaptation most Berserk readers recommend first. Miura's involvement was that of the original author, not of an animation designer.

The Golden Age Arc film trilogy (2012 to 2013), from Studio 4°C, used character designs by Naoyuki Onda, with a cleaner, more cinematic finish and computer assisted battle scenes. The 2016 television series, which continued past the Golden Age, used character designs by Hisashi Abe and leaned heavily on 3D computer animation, a choice that divided audiences precisely because Miura's art is defined by hand drawn density.

For collectors the distinction prices the paper. Cels and production art from 1997 are Umakoshi lineage designs; film art is Onda lineage; neither is Miura manga art, and listings that blur the two should be read carefully. The Library's Berserk section covers the adaptations' release history; this entry keeps the hands straight.
