Who Is Askeladd Based On?

Two men in one: a slave-born king of Norway, and a Welsh legend.

Askeladd’s given name, Lucius Artorius Castus, is the manga telling on itself. His backstory makes him the son of the Viking Olaf and a Welsh captive who claimed descent from Artorius, the Romano-British figure behind the Arthur legends; the War Arc’s Welsh chapters and Askeladd’s whole secret agenda grow from that root.

His shape as a character, though, came from history’s Olaf Tryggvason, the Norwegian king who was enslaved as a boy and rose to a throne. Yukimura’s original concept for Vinland Saga was a story about a slave, modelled on Olaf; editorial pushback turned the slave into the Viking Thorfinn, and the displaced slave-king material settled into Askeladd instead, the mentor-enemy who carries the book’s first half.

The name itself is Norwegian folk material: Askeladden, “the Ash Lad,” is the underestimated youngest son of the folktales who wins by wit. Yukimura gave the folktale name to his cleverest man.
