Who is Kazushi Hagiwara?

The assistant whose side project ate Weekly Shonen Jump.

Kazushi Hagiwara was born on April 4, 1963, in Nakano, Tokyo. Inspired as a boy by Go Nagai’s Devilman, he worked his way into the industry the traditional way: as an assistant, first to Dirty Matsumoto, then to Izumi Matsumoto on the hit romance Kimagure Orange Road, drawing his own stories in his spare time. His Jump debut came with the short stories Binetsu Rouge (1987) and Virgin Tyrant (1988), the same season his pilot Wizard!! was winning over readers.

Bastard!! made him famous, and he has essentially spent his career on it: writing, supervising, and illustrating three Bastard!! novels for the Jump J Books line alongside the manga. His assistants work as Studio Loud In School, whose doujinshi activities are a story of their own, told on the studio page. In 2012 he stepped outside his own world to design the Geomancer and Rune Fencer armor sets for Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin, a rare guest credit that shows how far his design reputation travels.

THE CAREER IN BRIEF

1963 to today
The assistant years
Backgrounds and inks for other men’s hits, including one of the defining shonen romances of the 1980s. The polish that later made Bastard!!’s art famous was learned at someone else’s desk.
1987–1988: liftoff
Two one-shot credits and a pilot that tested so well it became a series within months. Few debuts in Jump history converted faster.
1988–present: one world
Bastard!! has been his life’s work for over thirty-five years: 27 volumes, two anime generations, and a readership that has waited out every delay. His drawing method is documented on the art page.
