Who is D, the Vampire Hunter?

The vampire king's only successful experiment, hunting his father's kind for hire.

D is a dhampir, half vampire and half human, and not by accident: the novels eventually establish that he was genetically engineered by the Sacred Ancestor, the first and greatest of the vampires, whom later books decline to distinguish from Dracula. The Ancestor ran crossbreeding experiments on countless subjects. D is the one success, a vampire built without the usual weaknesses, and he has shortened even his own name to a single letter in refusal of his father.

He is more than ten thousand years old and looks seventeen or eighteen, beautiful enough that his face is a plot device in nearly every book. Both races shun him: humans fear the Noble blood in him, and the Nobility despise the human half. So he rides the Frontier alone, taking contracts.

THE HUNTER'S KIT

What he carries
The crescent longsword
A blade as long as a Japanese nodachi, shaped after the scimitar curve Amano draws everywhere. D prefers steel to sorcery and reaches for his powers only in real need.
The cyborg horse
His mount is a cybernetic horse, Frontier technology under a medieval silhouette, the series' whole aesthetic in one animal.
The blue pendant
The jewel at his throat suppresses the automatic defences of Noble castles, laser fields and worse, and lets him walk into sealed places no other hunter can enter.
Wooden needles
Thrown at supernatural speed, his quiet second weapon, standard kit in the novels and the game.

THE PRICE OF THE BLOOD

Strengths and the one weakness
Nearly a Noble's strengths
Reflexes beyond the Nobility's, strength to restrain opponents with aura alone, and power second, perhaps, only to his father's.
Sun-sickness
His one recurring weakness strikes about once every five years, a killing sunstroke that fells ordinary dhampirs for days. D recovers in hours. The Bloodlust film builds one of its best scenes on it.
No thirst, no welcome
He can live as a normal human, which is the loneliest fact in the series: nothing forces him out of the villages that refuse him. He leaves anyway.

THE VOICES OF D

Five actors, one silence
Japan
Kaneto Shiozawa defined D in the 1985 film and the audio dramas. Hideyuki Tanaka voices him in Bloodlust, Hiroshi Yanaka in the PlayStation game.
English
Michael McConnohie (Streamline, 1992), Andrew Philpot (Bloodlust), John Gremillion (Sentai, 2015), and David Cui Cui in the GraphicAudio dramas.
