Who is Sasaki Kojiro in Vagabond?

The other protagonist. Inoue rebuilds the legend's villain into the manga's second life story.

Every Musashi telling needs Kojiro, the beautiful swordsman waiting at Ganryu Island. Vagabond does something no major telling had done: it stops, a third of the way in, and gives him fifty chapters of his own, from an abandoned deaf child taken in by the swordsman Kanemaki Jisai to the master of the long blade whose name the age whispers.

The deafness is Inoue's invention and his thesis. Kojiro experiences the world as pure motion and expression, unmediated by words, and becomes the manga's purest swordsman, against Musashi's noisy, thinking violence. When the two finally meet, Vagabond will not be asking who is stronger. It will be asking which way of being alive the sword rewards. It has been asking since volume 14.

THE MANGA'S KOJIRO

An invention, documented
Deaf from childhood
Inoue's boldest change to the legend: his Kojiro cannot hear. Raised by Kanemaki Jisai, the retired swordsman who took the abandoned boy in, he learns the sword in silence, reading bodies the way other men read speech.
Six volumes of his own
Chapters 128 to 179 step away from Musashi entirely and tell Kojiro's life from childhood: the manga's second protagonist, built so that the eventual duel is a meeting of equals, not a boss fight.
Sekigahara, from the other side
The Kojiro arc walks its hero through the same 1600 battlefield where the manga began, the two lives braided toward each other for a decade of chapters.
The historical man
The real Sasaki Kojiro founded the Ganryu school and fought with an extra-long nodachi. Of his inner life the record says almost nothing, which is precisely the space Inoue's invention fills.
Why it matters at Ganryu
In Yoshikawa and history, Kojiro is the final exam. In Vagabond he is the mirror: the other boy the age produced, gentler than Musashi and no less lethal, whose death the manga has been dreading on the reader's behalf since 2002.
