Who made Chrono Trigger?
The three were traveling in the United States in October 1992, researching computer graphics, when Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, and Akira Toriyama decided to make something no one had done before. Toriyama's editor Kazuhiko Torishima later described the concept as a fusion, 'Dragon Quest plus Final Fantasy', and arranged the diplomatic miracle behind it: Enix, Square's great rival, lent Yuji Horii to Square for the project. Square dubbed the trio the Dream Team, and put the name in the game itself, in the developers' ending.
A supergroup needs a producer. After more than a year of the three turning the idea over, Kazuhiko Aoki offered to produce, and the four spent four days brainstorming the game into shape. Square convened fifty to sixty developers. Akihiko Matsui, Yoshinori Kitase, and Takashi Tokita directed. Masato Kato, designated story planner, wrote most of the story, after he and Horii spent hours a day together through the first year building the plot.
The bench was as deep as the headline: Tetsuya Takahashi as graphic director, and among the field graphic artists, Tetsuya Nomura and Yusuke Naora, years before their own fame. Toriyama designed the aesthetic end to end: characters, monsters, vehicles, and the look of every era, and the staff studied his drawings to hold the style. Sakaguchi built the game's overall system; Horii supervised. The game shipped on March 11, 1995, became the second best-selling game of 1995 in Japan, and has shipped over five million copies across all its versions since.
