Who Voices Naruto in Japanese and English?
Takeuchi was cast in 2002 and voiced Naruto through the original series, Shippuden, the films and into Boruto, adjusting the performance as the character aged from twelve to Hokage. Her Naruto, raspy, loud and suddenly very quiet in the scenes that matter, is the performance Kishimoto's readers heard in their heads made official, and her delivery of the character's verbal tic, rendered dattebayo in Japanese, became a global catchphrase.
Flanagan took the role for Viz's English dub in 2005 and matched Takeuchi's marathon almost year for year, through the Cartoon Network run, the uncut releases, Shippuden's long dub tail and the films. The English dub's believe it rendering of the same tic is her era's marker. Both actresses have spoken in interviews about the physical toll and the attachment of voicing one character across what amounts to a whole career.
Around them, the two casts form parallel institutions: Kazuhiko Inoue and Dave Wittenberg as Kakashi, Chie Nakamura and Kate Higgins as Sakura, Noriaki Sugiyama and Yuri Lowenthal as Sasuke. Dub casting of this stability was not guaranteed in 2005, and the consistency is a large reason the English version holds up as a complete alternate edition of the show rather than a patchwork.
For the Library, voice documentation belongs with edition documentation: a Japanese DVD, an American broadcast recording and an uncut English disc are three different performances of the same script, and collectors of physical media routinely choose by cast. Cast data here follows the standard credited lineups of the two principal versions.
The two Narutos
Japanese: Junko Takeuchi, 2002 onward, all television eras and films. English: Maile Flanagan, 2005 onward, Viz dub of all eras and films. Both continued into the Boruto era.
Collector note
Signed media and cast-autograph items are dated by era: a 2005 broadcast-era signature and a Shippuden-era one come from different production periods of the same performance.
