Who Was the Real Thorfinn Karlsefni?

A real Icelander, about whom history kept only a few pages.

Thorfinn Karlsefni (Old Norse: Þorfinnr Karlsefni) was an Icelandic explorer of the early eleventh century who led one of the Norse attempts to settle Vinland, the land Leif Erikson had reached on North America’s coast. He sailed with his wife Gudrid Thorbjarnardóttir, whose own journeys made her one of the most-travelled women of the Viking Age, and their son Snorri, born in the new land, is remembered as the first child of European parents born in the Americas.

Almost everything else is saga, written down centuries later, and Yukimura has said the scarcity of hard fact is what drew him: the historical Thorfinn left room to build a person. The manga keeps the skeleton, the marriage, the voyage, the settlement that could not hold, and invents the life inside it: the manga’s Thorfinn is a Jomsviking’s son with a revenge years long, which no source claims for the real man.

The name travelled with the family: chapter 49 of the manga is titled “Karlsefni,” the moment the boy of the War Arc starts becoming the man of the sagas.
